Since I've been pregnant I've had a lot more time to read. Unfortunately my attention span has all but disappeared, as has my ability to comprehend non-linear or abstract concepts. The Thin Place is lovely, fluid, extraodinary and challenging, which means I only got about half of it. I loved the pieces I could focus on and blatantly skipped the pages that seemed to difficult or metaphysical.
My first year teaching, when an old friend was living in New York with his then girlfriend, I spent two or three afternoons at his family's house, either tutoring their youngest son or posing for his dad who is an artist. I really liked spending time with the family, but made a poor choice that severed the relationship. Shortly thereafter, my friend broke up with his girlfriend and moved back from New York and in with me, making matters even worse.
Back to the book. I'd read a sentence or two about The Thin Place over at the Bookslut blog and put it on reserve at the library. A week or two later, when I picked it up at my local branch I shuddered to see the cover, which is a painting by my friend's dad. It took me a week or two to get used to the cover before I could even open the book. I'm sure that didn't help matters much. And now, the book and the cover is featured on the Bookslut blog so I have to see it there too. Either way, Davis is a wonderful writer and I'd like to give The Thin Place another chance at some point when (if?) my brain cells regenerate.
