Boobies

After looking at a number of books about breastfeeding, I decided to purchase The Nursing Mother's Companion. I began reading it several weeks before the Fiendling's birth so I was well prepared to begin nursing in the delivery room. The Nursing Mother's Companion is easy to read and incredibly informative. It's an excellent resource for any mother who plans on nursing, yet it's not preachy and obnoxious like So That's What They're For, Janet Tamaro's "lighthearted" book on the subject.

Unlike Huggins, Tamaro is a lactation nazi. Right from the start she lets you know that formula feeding is like poison, and your child wil be scarred for life should you dare let him near anything other than your boobies or attempt to wean before he's old enough to cut his own meat. According to Tamaro everyone including doctors, nurses, family and friends will attempt to sabotage your desire to breastfeed and this defensive tone is pervasive. Rather than give useful advice or information, Tamaro repetitively tries to convince you that breast is best. This book is not for those who have already decided to nurse.
